Next time you make a purchase and the clerk asks, "Would you like your receipt in the bag?" Say NOOOOOOO. OK, really, just say, No, I would like to hold it myself.Saturday, I took my 10 year old, Katherine on her first shopping trip with her own substantial amount of money and gift cards to all sorts of fun places, like GAP and Limited 2. She was so careful each place we went to compare prices, shop sales, etc.
The line at Limited 2 was so long we decided to leave and go back later to make a purchase. We headed to Kids GAP. She had so much fun picking out a dress and making sure she had enough money and having all the clerks be so attentive to her decisions.
Katherine made her purchase using a gift card and a small amount of her cash. I used my AmEx to purchase an outfit for both of my girls and then we headed to lunch. Both receipts were in the bags..... wrongoooo... never again.
A fun mother/daughter lunch ended sooooooo sad. After we ate, Katherine headed to get ice cream, I stepped away from our table ( 5 steps, max) to hand her some money. When I turned back around .. the large GAP shopping bag was gone-2-3 seconds was all it took. I was quick to notify security, housekeeping, GAP, etc.
The Bag with Katherine's purchase can easily be returned for cash and another gift card and mine can be returned for a gift card or exchange. We made it so easy for a dishonest person.
Thankfully, we had only made a purchase at one store and the bag was not a complete treasure to whoever lifted it.
Katherine was so sad and I was sad for her. This is a hard lesson for a 10 year old. I kept telling her that if this is the worst thing that ever happens, we should be so thankful.
The protective mother in me wants to go purchase another one of those dresses for her, but that is life. We learn lessons in so many ways.
There is a part of me that is still hoping someone's conscience will hurt enough to return the bag to the mall security.
Oh... we were at Wellington Mall...not Palm Beach Mall, where I expect to have to watch my back, in case you are wondering.
I have so much to blog about.. I hope time allows it this week.

It is so sad that we can't trust everyone, but it may be better to learn that lesson sooner than later in life, but it is so sad for a 10 year old and takes a bit of their trusting and innocence about the world away. You just want to clobber the jerk that would steal from a child. I hope if something like that happened to me though, that I would have the presence of mind to handle it the way that you did.
