Oh, the smell of vinegar.... yes vinegar. The smell of white vinegar is the smell of my childhood spring memories for two reasons:
1) Spring Cleaning. After saving stacks of newspaper during the winter,
my mom would mix up a vinegar and water solution for the annual
spring cleaning of windows. She sprayed or scrubbed the windows with
the vinegar mixture and wiped them sparkling clean with the newspaper.
2) Easter Eggs. The Saturday before Easter was the day we woke up to
Eggs boiling on the stove. Once they were cooled, my mom mixed up
the Egg Dye Colors, using McCormick Food Coloring, Vinegar, and
warm water.
This recipe for the exact amounts is on the Mc Cormick Food Coloring
Box. I have tried other egg dying formulas and methods, yet I always
go back to the method my mom used.
Vinegar is the smell connected to spring cleaning and Easter Egg
dyeing.
I was reminded of this smell last night when I was with my friend, Mary
Beth, as we were cleaning the house of a family who was moving out
(a story in itself) anyhow, she was using Vinegar and Water solution to
clean. I caught a whiff of the vinegar smell and was taken back to
sparkling clean windows and brightly colored Easter Eggs.
