One week of summer behind us and we completed an entire book. "A Wrinkle In Time" by Madeline L'Engle. We have the printed book and the book on CD. What a great way to increase our reading time and the children's interest and comprehension. All week, we would bring the book and CDs with us in the car and the girls would take turns following along in the book as we "read" listened to the author read the book to us. This was a nice break for me from always being the out-loud reader of a group chapter book. Just our trips to and from the beach created a large block of reading time. With the CDs, I could still drive and listen.
This book is geared more to a middle school aged child, yet with the listening and reading along, my 7 and 10 year old girls were able to understand and become totally engrossed in the story. We would pull in to a parking lot or the driveway and have to sit and listen to the end of chapter as they insisted on reading more....more....more
As far as the book itself, I enjoyed it and so did the girls. I think we will read some of the other books by Madeline L'Engle. I highly recommend checking out the tapes or CD's of any book you or your children are reading. It gives a new dimension of enjoyment and understanding to the literature.
Without giving anything away, I will share one of the thought-provoking themes. There are science fiction and Christian theology messages throughout. Three children are sent on a dangerous journey. Each was blessed with a gift to help them on their way.
One of the main characters, Meg, was blessed with her faults. Her faults would become a strength and a blessing to her as she was this important journey. I have thought many times over the years about my own faults and weaknesses and how they have, at times, also been my greatest strengths. It is important, I have found, to learn from every experience in my life, be it positive or negative. I can always learn and turn negative in to positive. I always tell my children that they can learn even from the poorest example of how not be.
I was thankful for this reminder to use my faults as the blessings and turn them in to strengths.
