The Ants Go Marching and Digging, and On and On and On

What do you get for a child who LOVES nature, animals, and science?
An Ant Farm. Yes, an Ant Farm from Uncle Milton.
The Ants must be ordered separately from the Ant Farm Kit (form included in the Ant Farm Kit). Believe me, there is no way to get the Ants here soon enough once the Ant Farm Kit is ready and waiting. It was a looooong 6 week wait**.
We returned home from today's beach excursion to find Megan's Ant Farm Ants had arrived. Yes, the ones we paid for to go in her Ant Farm. The long wait was over....
Megan is officially a member of the Ant Farm Club
After reading the instructions (she could not get the Ant Farm set up quickly enough), and some quick maneuvering on my part ( and Ron's part came later), the sand was in place, the cotton ball was soaked with sugar water, and the ants were happily in their new home. Ready to dig tunnels and entertain us for hours.
Nature is truly amazing.
It is fascinating to watch these ants work together to move the sand, carry their food, build a mound to get their water source, respond to movement, communicate etc.
The Ants arrive in a plastic "Test Tube". They are very active and move so quickly once they get out of that cramped Tube.
It is true, that we spend a great deal of time, and in some cases, money to keep ants out of our home, yet I paid for the "special" ants. There is no queen ant included, so their life span will be short. I have already filled out the order for the next "Tube of Ants"
When my boys had the Uncle Milton Ant Farm, I remember we tried to add ants we found from outside in our yard, They did not do well in the Ant Farm and were not as fun to watch as the large Harvester Ants provided by Uncle Milton.
**I would recommend purchasing the Ant Farm without your child knowing (especially for a very young child who does not have a concept of time and waiting), then ordering the ants. Once the ants arrive, then bring out the Ant Farm Kit and set it up together. Waiting for the ants to arrive after purchasing the Kit was a long process.
These Ant Farm Kits are available at Toys R Us or Online from UncleMilton.com.
Even if you are squeamish about bugs and creepy crawly things, I highly recommend enjoying and Ant Farm with your children.
