With the large crowd I was planning for (and hosted), I knew that lengthy and tedious games were not an option (they are never good for a large group, anyhow) I like activities that get people talking and mixing.
When planning a shower, I always focus on the person and point out in my welcome to the guests that we are gathered not only to shower the guest of honor with gifts, but with our love, support, and best wishes. With that in mind, this is what I planned:
1) The Jelly Belly Tasting Game (I presented 8 flavors of Jelly Bellys in numbered cups. All were various shades of pink. I gave each guest a sheet with 12 choices of flavors telling them that they would only use 8 of the choices.) It was a lot of fun and much better than the old tasting baby food or looking at baby food with the labels on to guess the flavor. I used this game for a St Patricks Day Themed Birthday Party with Green Jelly Bellys
2) The "It's All About Beth" Game I explained to Beth that this was the last time in her life that anything would "be about her". Each guest had a sheet with 20 questions all about Beths life, favorites, etc. The person matching the most answers like Beth got a Prize. The winner only got 10 (I disqualified her mom and sisters)
3) The Tribute To Beth Prior to the Shower, I asked Ryan, Beth's husband to write a tribute to Beth that would be read to Beth at her shower. Sounds great and easy.... well try to read when you are crying and trying to stay composed. It was beautiful
4) Shower Cap Hot Potato I did not do this at this shower as most of the guests know this and it would not have the same effect. At the very beginning of the Shower, I present a beautifully wrapped package containing a corsage for the Guest of Honor, yet no one knows what is in the box. I tell the guests that since we are at a shower, this box contains a shower cap and we are going to play hot potato to see who is stuck holding the box and who will have to WEAR the shower cap for the duration of the shower. It gets very lively as you can imagine. When the box is finally opened by the person dreading a shower cap inside, there is the corsage to be pinned on the guest of honor. The person who was a good sport with the "hot potato shower cap" box gets a prize.
5) The Forbidden Word Game When guests arrived, a necklace with a plastic baby pacifier was placed around their necks. They were told that if anyone heard them say the words baby or pregnant, they could take their necklace or vice a versa, they could take a necklace from someone who says those words. The person with the most necklaces at the end of the night wins a prize. I like this game as it is ongoing and promotes conversations and mingling. For other parties, rather than a necklace, I use a clothespin for each guest.
