This week, 7 year old Megan will attend Zoo Camp at the Palm Beach Zoo. She is so excited tonight, sleep is eluding her. Little does she know, while she is tossing and turning, I am carefully planning to make her week of packed lunches a "modern" experience. Hopefully, my plans will avoid a conversation like the one we had while she was attending Art Camp at the beginning of summer vacation. A conversation that reminded me of my sister Jenni and her lunch packing woes...
My conversation with Megan went something like this....
Megan: Why are my lunches so 'Old Fashioned'?
I was ready for this... for certain, she was going to give me the "Every one's mom except for mine packs Lunchables, Soda, Fruit Roll Ups, Candy, etc." line.
I was ready for this... for certain, she was going to give me the "Every one's mom except for mine packs Lunchables, Soda, Fruit Roll Ups, Candy, etc." line.
Me: What do you mean by "Old Fashioned"?
OK, I thought, here it comes, be ready...
Megan: You never pack those Pik Nik Shoestring Potatoes!!!!Everyone else knows what they are!!!! Why have I never tasted them? Do you even know what they are? Do know where to buy them? That is the newest thing to pack for your children's lunch.
Me: What else would you like for me to pack? What else is new that I don't know about?
Megan: Nothing, just the Pik Nik Shoestring Potatoes. I really want my own so my friend does not have to share hers with me. Oh--- can you give me extra so I can pay her back for the ones she shared?
Me: Sure
Wow, no conversation about Lunchables, Soda, Chips, Fruit Roll Ups, Candy, and all the other things I DO NOT pack in lunches????? No convincing my 7 year old that her lunches are healthy and good for her????
With the help of a few cans of Pik Nik Shoestring Potatoes, and just like that, I am a "Modern Mom".
**Now here is a Lunch Packing Tip from a "Modern Mom" . The Tip may not be modern, but it will open up a new frontier in The Land Of Lunch Packing once the school bell rings this fall.
**My favorite lunch-packing-sanity-saving-discovery is----A Thermos for each child! No more sandwiches day in and day out. Soup, Mac and Cheese, Spaghetti, Last night's leftovers, the sky is the limit. Using a Thermos for packing Children's Lunches changed my life... OK....maybe not my life, but my perspective. I no longer dread the Lunch Packing deed.
Oh.... and by all means.... purchase your Back To School Thermos NOW before they are picked over in August when the rest of the Back To School shoppers decide to simplify their Lunch Packing dilemmas.
My sister, Jenni, and I concur on the Thermos enlightenment.....

Interesting, I never would have thought of using a thermos for all of those uses. I'll have to try it. My kids have to beg me to let them take lunch to school.
Where can I buy these? I've never seen them in our store but I must get some and do something special for Nik. He'd be embarrassed that I told this but when we very first met he informed me that "pik-nik's" come with an eternal guarantee and I still hear that today. It's great that these are called pik niks, I could do so much with these!
Yes, Emily, these are perfect for your Nik. I got them at Publix in the chip section. They come in cans or in small pouches.
