The Saga Of The Ceramic Tile...
Below are photos of my recent and ongoing battle over the Ceramic Tile Floor in my 10 year old home. Every blue marker indicates the tile is: Hollow, Tenting, Lifting, Loose, or Cracked.
Who is the battle with? Lennar Homes. They have been to our house 2 times. Each time the person making the "Costumer Service" call said, 1) Yes, You have a problem 2) Yes, this needs to be repaired 3) I do not have the authority to order this repair, call so and so..... When I went "up the ladder" to speak with "so and so", the Customer service did not improve. I won't even go in to some of the ridiculous comments made to me, a woman, by a man who thought he was dealing with a stupid woman. Long story short.. I started using email as the form of communication, for documentation purposes. I got the email and phone numbers of the President of the South East Division of Lennar and copied him on everything..still not a great interest or response...until... I started CC'ing my husband openly instead of Blind Copying the emails. All of the sudden, seeing my husband's e-mail address and who he works for (A prominent Commercial Builder), my floor problem has top priority attention and they are all headed to my house this week, President of the Division and all.... I am ready for them..... I hope they are ready for me...
There is not one area of our Dining Room, Living Room, Family Room, Laundry Room, and downstairs Bathroom without the majority of the tile compromised. In fact, I counted 235 Tiles with Blue Markers---in other math terms--- that is 70% of our Ceramic Tile. When we purchased this home 3 years ago, there were 3-4 hollow tiles.... now it is 235 and getting more every day.
This Problem is not unique to our house. This entire neighborhood is plagued by the faulty tile installation job. Lennar has had to repair and replace in many homes over the past few years. Once Lennar knew that I understood this was NOT a Warranty issue, yet a faulty installation issue, we made some forward motion toward a resolution.
I have been doing my homework. Three different Tile Professional have given their opnions, suggestions, and estimates for the cost of repair. The only repair option is... replacement of the entire floor. Injecting each tile is not an option at this point.
The replacement will turn our household upside down, yet needs to happen. Tiles are tenting and shifting more and more every day. In reviewing the estimates for replacement, I am reminded of just how big of a job this is: Moving and Storing Furniture, Chippin out andRemoving exisisting tiles, Removing Basboards, Prepping the floor properly, Installing the Tile, Grouting, Moving Furniture back in to place, etc. etc. etc. I did not see this huge of a project coming when I considered the year 2007 in review.
Just one more exciting event to post progess on....

I had forgotten that you had moved to a new house (and I've been there once:) What a job you have ahead of you all. Good luck and get um! What causes this to happen? How do they install it that badly? I'm just curious because we had someone recently tile our kitchen and bathrooms. I hope they did a good job. I guess time will tell.
My in-laws ripped up part of the tile in their house last year (thanks to my son) and what a pain and mess that was. They were going to take it out of their whole kitchen, but realized how much work it would require just to get all of the tile and mortar out and downsized the area they were going to change.
