Young Women Lesson Ideas

Teaching Modesty
Temple Marriage

Temple Dress-Modesty Reminder Hanger and Handout Ideas
For many years, this has been my tried and true favorite Young Women Lesson Handout Reminder. A White Satin Padded Hanger with a poem by LInda Dastrup* attached. The poem is copied on card stock and hung around the top of the hanger with a large white bow. I purchase the hangers at Linens and Things or Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

I gave these out at a Stake Standards Event when I was Stake Young Women President and I have given them out in my Ward with any lesson regarding Temple Marriage, Worthy Standards, Chasity, etc, When new Beehives enter the program, I try to time a lesson that will go along with the presentation of a hanger, or I present it in a one on one explanation.

I challenge each Young Woman to hang this hanger in a prominent section of her closet and to reserve it for hanging her White Temple dress. The hanger is to be in a place she will see daily that reminds her to live a life worthy of marrying in The Temple of The Lord.

Recently, I have updated this handout to include living the Lords Standard of Modesty in Dress. I challenge the Young Women to make sure this hanger is found only among modest clothing that a Daughter of God would wear. I ask them to think about the clothing in their closets and drawers that will have to co-exist with this hanger.

I have been teaching Young Women off and on for 25 years. Never have I felt such an urgency to teach the importance of Modesty in dress by word and example.

In a BYU Women's Conference Talk "Arise and Shine Forth" by Elaine Dalton, (and absolutely incredible resource for teaching parents and Young Women) there is a quote from some Young Women in Brazil regarding Modesty in dress. They say, "Modesty is not about climate...it is about the heart." I used this quote with an addition and mounted it on a heart for each girl. On each heart it reads, "Modesty Is Never About The Climate, Fads, Or Latest Fashions, Yet Always About The Heart."

Many of her ideas are things I have used for years.
Here is the Temple Hanger Poem that I hang around each hanger:

This Temple Hanger as made especially for you,
For your temple dress someday, white and new.
As you see this hanger in your closet each day,
Remember to be morally clean in every way.
Prepare now for the blessings the temple brings.
Choose what is right, strive for eternal things.
The most important decision you'll ever make
Is the one you will choose for your eternal mate.
Date Young Men that will respect your virtue
And to their Priesthood Covenants be true.
Our Father in Heaven is watching over you
Set high standards and worthy goals pursue.
He will help you to always choose what is right,
If you seek His protection each day and night
Your life will be blessed as you follow the Lord,
So keep His commandments and live His word
Live you life so you can go to the temple,
It's the Lord's House and He wants you to enter
