Saturday was one of our neighborhood Quarterly Garage Sale Days. The gates are open to eager Garage Sale Shoppers from 7-12 on four specific dates per year. If Garage Sales are your "thing" then this is a mecca for you on these four days per year.
With Ron out of town, I did not even attempt to open up shop in my driveway (even though one-third of my 3-car garage looks like a Garage Sale waiting to happen)
Early Saturday morning, while the girls were still half asleep, I left for the gym. I forgot (just did not mention) that it was neighborhood Garage Sale Day. When I returned home, the subject just did not come up (whew), I thought I was safe..no Garage Sale shopping for the girls. You see, I host Garage Sales (and swear I will never host another one every time) yet I do not enjoy the Early Bird Saturday Morning Garage Sale Shopping Scene. I like getting RID of stuff, not bringing MORE stuff home.
Around 11am, the girls remembered that it was Garage Sale Day. They were out the door and on their bikes. Secretly, I am in the house hoping all the Garage Sales are over...closed...done for the day.
Minutes later, they returned with reports of Garage Sales EVERYWHERE. (My hopes of the sales being over were not realized) I gave them each 50 cents and told them to go buy something they wanted. After all, how much junk can a child bring home for 50 Cents? Just guess....
What would YOU do if two excited little girls showed up at the end of your Garage Sale with 50 cents to spend? You may see, as many of my neighbors did, those little girls as the ticket to carry the last of your STUFF out of your life....AND they would even pay you 50 cents for the honor!
MOM, MOM, look everyone told us we could have ANYTHING we want FOR FREE. We spent our money and then everyone told us since the Garage Sales are closing, we could choose AS MUCH AS WE WANT FOR FREE.
Wow, I was thinking, how lucky can we possibly get... Free Stuff that someone did not want, and I do not want...
Oh well, At least I have more STUFF in my "To-Sell or Giveaway Pile" and my girls feel like they hit the best Garage Sale Jackpot ever. I see JUNK...they see a TREASURE.
One man's junk is truly another man's treasure...It is all in the perspective...like EVERYTHING in life.
Do you like Garage Sales?
Do You Like to host them or shop at them?

There must be something in the blood...last night on the way home from work, we saw a dresser that looked like someone was throwing away. We asked and they let us take it home for free! It's pretty sturdy, and in pretty good shape. Carmen is going to do some type of paint treatment to it. We also recently got a kitchen cabinet that someone was throwing out...I'm not sure yet where we'll use these things, but Carmen has plans.
I scored almost all of the books on both girls' reading lists for the summer and for next year at a sale in NJ for $9.
Last week I scored a brand new, much needed, new music stand and Boggle from my neighbor for free. Both items were totally junk to her, but total necessities for us!
