As a service project, I had the Young Women at Church learn how to make these basic baby blankets. This was the first time any of them had made a baby blanket. I insisted that each girl participate in every step along the way, from pinning to trimming to tying, etc. During the entire evening, I emphasized the following point: We Are Making These Blankets With Love, Not Perfection. Not being the most accomplished seamstress myself, I was concerned that I could teach them this basic method in a manner that would build their confidence and give them a desire to learn to sew. I also wanted them to taste the sweetness of serving others. They simply amazed me at every turn.....I Love these girls dearly!
At the end of the evening, we had completed 4 Baby Blankets with every girl begging to do more. As a result, we had Baby Blankets: Week 2. The attitude of every girl was incredible. A sweet spirit of love and cooperation existed in that room and every blanket was truly stitched with love.
Four of the Blankets will be sent to Cindy at Skip to My Lou for shipment to an orphanage in China. The remaining blankets will be donated locally.

When the girls had down time during the blanket-making process, I had the girls sort through and organize a huge tub of Hotel Toiletries (thanks to my friends Cathi and David C.) The toiletries were used to make hygeine kits for a Women and Children's Shelter here in Palm Beach County.
Summer was a huge lifesaver on the sewing machine. She is a very accomplished seamstress for such a young person!

Fun. Our stake is doing baby blankets too, for the church's new baby kits (or whatever they are called). The stake has a goal of 1000 blankets. Our YW have worked on them several times, and we are also doing them next week during Super Saturday.
